H.E. Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche has sponsored the building of the first replica Ashoka pillar in Sri Lanka, at the sacred premises of Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya, which was unveiled and inaugurated on July 21st by the Indian High Commission, with the participation of Chief Incumbent of the Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya, Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayaka Thero, His Excellency Santosh Jha, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka as the Chief Guest, and many other dignitaries.
The Ashoka pillar was sponsored by H.E. Ling Rinpoche as a heartfelt offering dedicated to His Holiness the Greatest 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, on the auspicious occasion of His Holiness’ 90th birthday.
His Holiness has dedicated his entire, extraordinary life in the service of the Dharma and all sentient beings. His Holiness’s global impact in promoting human values of love, peace and compassion, interfaith harmony, and His collaboration with contemporary Western scientists to validate the essence of Buddha’s teachings and demonstrate their value to all of humanity is unparalleled in this world.
His Holiness’s immeasurable kindness can never be repaid.
The Ashoka pillars are a series of monolithic columns, primarily erected during the 3rd century BCE by the Emperor Ashoka, to disseminate the Buddhist-inspired Dharma of righteous conduct. These pillars, inscribed with Ashoka’s edicts, served as a means to promote ethical behavior throughout his vast empire. Twenty of these pillars still survive, and are a timeless symbol of Dharma, peace, and moral strength, reminding us to live with truth, compassion, and unity.
